2019 AFCON Qualifier: Kenya's Harambee Stars beat Ethiopia 3-0

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Kenya's international star striker, Michael Olunga, boosted his national side's chances of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations competition to be hosted by Cameroon when he scored the first goal in a 3-0 victory over Ethiopia in their Group F qualifying match played in Nairobi on Sunday.

Olunga, who turns out for Japanese side, Kashiwa Reysol, opened the scoring for the Harambee Stars in the 22nd minute at Kasarani Sports Complex before a capacity crowd after the government announced the waiver of the entry fees.

Erick Johanna Omondi, who plays for IF Brommapojkarna, a Swedish club, put the Harambee Stars in a commanding lead with the second goal in the 26th minute.

Harambee Stars Captain, Victor Wanyama, Kenya's only player in the European league, gave the home side their third goal in the 66th minute after a free kick.

The Harambee Stars held the Ethiopians, Walya Antelopes, at the Bahir Dar stadium in Ethiopia, to a goalless draw in last week's encounter.

Kenya lead the group with 7 points from 4 matches. Ethiopia are second with 4 points from 4 matches while Ghana have 3 points from 2 matches and Sierra Leone are at the bottom with no point from 2 matches. The matches between Ghana and Sierra Leone have not been played as the Sierra Leoneans are under FIFA suspension.

The Kenyan side have not qualified for the continental showpiece since 2004.

The Harambee Stars piped Ghana's Black Stars 1-0 in the Group F qualifier in Nairobi last month.

The Kenyan government pledged US$500,000 to the national team if they win.
