2019 AFCON: Madagascar stun Nigeria 2-0 to top Group B; Guinea boost chances with 2-0 win over Burundi

Alexandria, Egypt (PANA) - Madagascar on Sunday stunned Nigeria 2-0 in their last Group B match of the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup Nations (AFCON) tournament played at the Alexandria Stadium to top the group with seven points.

Meanwhile, Guinea boosted their chances of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams with a 2-0 win over Burundi in their match played at the Al Salam stadium.

Unsung Madagascar went ahead against three-time champions Nigeria in the 13th minute through Lalaina Nomenjanahary.

John Ogu sent a weak pass to Leon Balogun at the back, which was stolen by Nomenjanahary who went round the goalkeeper to slot the ball into the net.

Carolus Andriamatsinoro's free kick in the 53rd minute deflected off the wall into the net for Madagascar's second goal.

Although Nigeria had the lion's share of possession, Madagascar's players stood their ground.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Yattara's brace in the 35th and 52nd minutes gave Guinea a lifeline to reach the Round of 16.

With the results, Madagascar top the group with 7 points. Nigeria have 

6 points, Guinea have 4 points and Burundi have nil.
