2014 AWC: Cote d'Ivoire wins bronze, beats South Africa 1-0 in 3rd-place match

Windhoek, Namibia (PANA) - Cote d’Ivoire snatched Africa's third and final ticket to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Canada, after a 1-0 win over South Africa in the third-place match here Saturday at the 9th African Women Championship in Namibia.

Rebecca Ida scored the only goal of the match six minutes from time to hand ‘Les Elephantes’ the final African slot for the mundial, joining Nigeria and Cameroon, the finalists here.

The feat represents a huge feat for the Ivorians who are participating in the African Women Championship only for the second time.

The West Africans did what mattered most – scoring in the encounter that clearly had the South Africans as the dominant force. Banyana Banyana was haunted by their inability to convert the countless goal scoring opportunities that came their way.

Nigeria is meeting Cameroon about now in the finals match.
