'Increase in gender-based violence a concern' - Masisi

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - As Botswana joins the world on Monday in marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to stamp out abuse of women and girls, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi says his government is concerned by new cases of serious gender-based violence and abuse against them.

He said the government will never rest until this problem is brought under control.

Botswana is joining the rest of the world to mark the first day of the "Sixteen Days of Activism on Violence against Women and Children".

President Masisi speaking at the start of the cabinet retreat in Manong Game Lodge, about 93 km from the capital city, Gaborone, on Saturday, stressed that the problem must be brought under control through a combination of strategies that include strengthened legislation, policing and effective mobilization for community involvement.
