'Burkinabe government willing to reach consensual transition duration with ECOWAS'

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The Burkinabe government is willing to reach a consensual duration of the transition with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

"This consensual duration between the two parties will have to be part of a dynamic compromise," the Burkinabe government said in a statement issued on Saturday at the end of a two-day working visit by the ECOWAS mediator, former Niger president Mahamadou Issoufou.

For the implementation of this dynamic compromise, the mediator proposed to the government the establishment of a monitoring and evaluation mechanism, the statement said, adding that the Burkinabe government has agreed in principle to the establishment of this mechanism.

During his stay, Mr. Issoufou met the Burkina Faso military junta, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

He also met with representatives of political parties, customary and religious authorities, the National Youth Council and a delegation from the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

With regard to the duration of the transition, the Burkinabe government recalled that it was set by the National Conferences at 36 months adding that the situation in the country remains marked by major security and humanitarian challenges.

"The need for funding for the implementation of the action plan to secure the territory, the humanitarian response and the return to normal constitutional life is estimated at more than 2.3 trillion CFA francs," according to the government, which reiterated its appeal to the ECOWAS Heads of State for substantial support in mobilising these resources.

It also reiterated its call for the lifting of Burkina Faso's suspension from ECOWAS bodies.

The statement said the mediator welcomed the openness to dialogue shown by the government, as well as all the efforts made to return to a normal constitutional order.
