Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) -
Mauritian Women's Rights
Minister Arianne Navarre-Marie on Friday called on fellow
women on the island nation to get involved in "active
politics" because the country needed their talent.
"Unfortunately, Mauritian women are not prepared to
sacrifice their professional careers and family lives for
politics," she said.
Speaking at a ceremony ahead of the International Women's
Day which falls on 8 March, Navarre-Marie urged women to
get involved in parliamentary and local government
politics, in addition to all other decision-making bodies.
"We must be able to organise ourselves. Women must change
their mentality," she declared.
She affirmed that women's representation in decision-
making circles was a major concern of the Mauritian state.
According to Navarre-Marie, the government committed
itself before the Southern Africa Development Community
(SADC) to ensure greater participation of women in the
country's political life.
"There is consensus on this subject within the country's
major political parties, for we need more women to take
part in government and in opposition parties," she said.
