'Situation in Darfur exaggerated'

Paris, France (PANA) - The chairman of the Federation of African Workers in France (FEATF), Sidi Guèye, has said the portrayal of the humanitarian situation in the Sudan's western Darfur region "did not match the realities (on the ground)".

"We travelled all over the northern and southern parts of Darfur, visited refugee camps, talked freely with them. We believe the situation there does not at all match the description made everyday in the West," he said at a news conference here Friday.

He said the situation in Darfur was just another conflict situation.

"According to teachers interviewed, pupils in some refugee camps make the same or even better school performances as those in the schools in the capital, Khartoum," the FETAF chairman said, noting his team did not notice any sense of despair among the people.

He also stressed the Sudanese people's desire to end the Darfur crisis by favouring an African solution.

"During this field visit, we noted a certain desire of the Sudanese people, politicians as well as civil society, to get out of it with support from their African brothers.

''They are aware that Sudan, like the rest of Africa, must remain a land of mixed cultures, religions and ethnic groups," the union official added.
