| UN information chief to parley with Nigerian journalists

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) -
United Nations Under Secretary-General for
Communications and Public Information, Kiyo Akasaka, will interact
with Nigerian
journalists here Thursday on a number of issues on the agenda of the
UN, as part of his duty tour of UN Offices in West Africa, a statement
from the UN
Information Centre (UNIC) in Nigeria said.
''During his visit to Lagos, Mr. Akasaka would discuss (with
journalists) current issues on the agenda of the United Nations. This
special event, in honour of
the Under Secretary-General, is a part of our media outreach to
promote the views, activities and concerns of the UN to the public,"
the statement added.
Akasaka, who heads the Department of Public Information at the UN
Headquarters in New York, is responsible for the strategic
communications and public information policy of
the global body to ensure that the organisation provides accurate and
coordinated information about its work, priorities and
responsibilities to the media, civil society and the general public
Prior to his current post, Akasaka was the Deputy Secretary-General of
the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) from
August 2003 to March 2007.
He was Japan's Ambassador to the UN from 2000 to 2001 and served as a
bureau member for the preparation of the World Summit on Sustainable
Development, held in Johannesburg in 2002.
Akasaka joined the United Nations in 2007, when he was appointed as
Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information.
In May 2008, the Secretary-General appointed him as Coordinator of
questions relating to multilingualism throughout the UN Secretariat.
These functions are in addition to his current responsibilities as
head of the Department of Public Information (DPI).
