Ivorian crisis: Gbagbo forces respond to Ouattara's offensive

Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (PANA) - Forces loyal to outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo, are responding  to the massive offensive by troops loyal to the internationally-acclaimed winner of the Ivorian elections, Alassane Ouattara, which, in the past four days, were making a final push to wrest power in Abidjan, the Ivorian capital, from Gbagbo.

PANA reports that both forces have been engaged in a fierce battle since Thursday and the war zone was around the national television, Gbagbo's residence in Cocody and the Presidential Palace at the Plateau.

Heavy artillery gun sounds are still being heard in Abidjan.

The people, locked up at home for safety, get their information about developments through telephone messages, as the local radio and national television stations have all gone off the air.

No official declaration has come from either of the two sides.
