Ivorian council urges Gbagbo to relinquish power

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) - The chairman of the Ivorian Economic and Social Council (CES), Laurent Dona-Fologo, has asked incumbent Laurent Gbagbo to hand over power to president- elect Alassane Ouattara ''as soon as possible”.

in a statement posted on its website, the council said it had taken note of the ongoing events in the country, adding that there is no alternative to allowing the internationally-recognised winner of the country's election to assume office.

The public support given to Mr Ouattara by a public institution is a further sign of the weakening support for Gbagbo in the West African nation.

The balance of power has been reversed in favour of Ouattara, after forces loyal to him swept across the country and are now fighting in the economic capital city of Abidjan, where Gbagbo is based.
