Ivorian civil society proposes presidential polls rerun to break political deadlock

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) - Ivorian Civil Society groups Thursday proposed a rerun of the presidential election to end the political crisis hitting the country since the 28 November run-off produced Alassane Ouattara as winner with the incumbent Laurent Gbagbo refusing to cede power.

But, the 64-member Ivorian civil society, which held their extraordinary general meeting Wednesday and Thursday, said the rerun should take place if the current impasse is not resolved by the end of January.

They also proposed the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and its administration by the civil society, the partial reorganization of the Constitutional Council to reinforce its credibility and impartiality, the total disarmament of all those who illegally possess weapons in Côte d’Ivoire and the actual reunification of the Ivorian Army.
