Ivorian Premier seeks introduction of civic service

Abidjan- Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) -- Ivorian Premier Guillaume Soro has said the introduction of the national civic service will lower the risk of young Ivorians taking up arms in the country.
Soro's statement came Friday at the opening of a seminar on national civic service, the introduction of which is part of the major issues to be examined and implemented by the Ivorian government under the Ouagadougou peace accord, which seeks to end the country's lingering political crisis.
"The national civic service should be directed towards the management of training and integration of former combatants and self-defence groups," Soro said.
The Ivorian government plans to use the national civic service as a platform to rehabilitate members of self-defence groups and ex-combatants who will not be selected into the new army.
