Issue of Mauritanian refugees come to fore

Nouakchott- Mauritania (PANA) -- The Democratic Bloc, an offshoot of the Knights of Change (a former armed group opposed to the regime of Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya), has called for a "national consultation to solve the problem of displaced Mauritanians still living in exile in neighbouring countries".
At a major rally in Nouakchott, the group's leaders expressed solidarity with all political prisoners, suspected Salafists -- some of whom have been detained without trial for nearly two years -- as well as Mauritanians suspected of being members of Al Qaeda and detained at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Mauritanian refugees and deportees have been living in Senegal and Mali since April 1989, following ethnic clashes that killed several hundred persons on either side of the Senegal river.
