Involving the media in Guinea's anti-corruption crusade

Conakry- Guinea (PANA) -- Newspaper chief executives in Guinea have suggested greater involvement of the media in the country's fight against corruption.
This was one of the resolutions from their just-ended meeting in Conakry with officials of the National Anti-Corruption Committee.
The newspaper chiefs called for material support and amendment of media laws to achieve the goal, noting that some legislation in the country posed difficulties to the journalism profession.
They also requested tax exemption on materials used in newspaper production, saying this would reduce the cover prices of newspapers and help the dissemination of information to the public.
The newspaper chiefs also asked for more training in investigative journalism.
But while noting the right of the media to information, the Guinean Economy and Finance Minister, Cheick Amadou Camara, who chaired the meeting, said apart from contributing to the development of society, journalists should also help to improve the country's image.
