India: Niger scrape through to Round of 16 despite Brazil loss

Goa, India (PANA) - Niger fell 0-2 to Brazil in their final Group D 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup match played on Friday at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, but the two teams have reached the Round of 16 with Niger going through as one of the best third-place finishers.

The West Africans conceded two goals in the first half but were able to contain the Brazilians in the second half to limit the damage.

In the other Group D match, Spain beat hapless DPRK 2-0 to also advance. Brazil ended the group matches with a perfect 9 points, Spain had 6 points, Niger 3 points and DPRK, who were eliminated, nil.

Earlier in the day in Group C matches, Africa's fourth representative, Guinea bowed out after losing 1-3 to Germany.

Iran also beat Costa Rica 3-0 to send the Central Americans home.

Iran topped the group with a perfect 9 points, followed by Spain with 6 points, Guinea was third with 1 point, the same as Costa Rica who finished fourth.

Meanwhile, the competition continues on Saturday with the final matches in Groups E and F.

France will play Honduras and Japan meet New Caledonia in Group E.

France lead the Group with 6 points followed by Japan with 3 points, same as Honduras while New Caledonia have nil.

In Group F, Mexico will play Chile while England play Iraq.

England lead the Group with 6 points, Iraq have 4, Mexico 1 and Chile nil.
