ICC orders Uganda to pay $325 million reparation to DR Congo
The Hague, The Netherlands (PANA) - The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday ruled that Uganda should pay a total of $325 million to DR Congo as reparations in the case concerning the damage caused by the armed activities of Uganda on the territory of the DR Congo.
The judgement is final and without appeal and is binding on the Parties, the Court said.
The court ruled that Uganda should pay DR Congo $225 million for "damage to persons"; $40 million for "damage to property"; and $60 million for "damage related to natural resources".
The court ruled that the total amount should be paid in five annual installments of $65 million starting on 1 September 2022.
Should payment be delayed, post-judgment interest of 6 per cent will accrue on any overdue amount as from the day which follows the day on which the instalment was due.
The court rejected the request of the DR Congo that the costs it incurred in the case be borne by Uganda.
The case dates back to Uganda invading and occupying DR Congo's Ituri province between 1998 and 2003.
