UNAMID helps in involving ordinary people to achieve peace in Darfur
Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudanese government and armed opposition groups, the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF- Darfur Track) Tuesday organized a second meeting that brought together native administration chiefs and civil society leaders from five Darfur states to deliberate on achieving peace in the restive region of Darfur.
The United Nations-African Union Peace Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said the two sides had worked in partnership with it for the organization of the consultative conference for more than 100 representatives of civil society and native administration drawn from all five Darfur states.
The UNAMID in a publication on its activities in the region released here Tuesday said the cooperation was spurred by the UNSC Resolution 2495 (2019), according to which it was providing logistical support to the Sudan Peace Commission, TGoS, and SRF -Darfur Track, to organize two major consultative conferences for internally displaced persons (IDPs), native administration and civil society to facilitate their participation in peace talks currently underway in Juba, South Sudan.
UNAMID said on 30 January, the Joint Field Committee comprising the Transitional Government of Sudan (TGoS) and Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF)- Darfur Track in partnership with UNAMID, organized a consultative conference for 200 representatives of IDPs drawn from all Darfur states.
The overall aim of the consultative meeting is to facilitate the participation of these groups in peace talks currently underway in Juba, South Sudan.
These groups are normally sidelined in the peace talks and the matter is left for politicians to decide.
This time, both the transitional government, the UN and partners who usually provide funding and logistics to the peace talks, the Troika group, in particular, have decided that the ordinary people, women and millions of the internally displaced should take part in all peace talks.
