Munyonyo, Uganda (PANA) -
Uganda Thursday called on African Union (AU) member st
ates and the international community in general to
marshal collective action against perpetrators of international lawlessness, as
the East African country mourns the loss of lives and damage of property caused
b
y terrorist attacks on 11 July 2010.
Addressing the opening of the 17th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council
at this lakeside resort, Uganda's Deputy Prime Minister
Eriya Kategaya said the callous act, for which Somalia's rebel Al Shabab group h
as claimed responsibility, ''brings to the fore the danger
posed by terrorism on our continent and beyond.''
Kategaya also called upon the session to comprehensively address the challenges
facing Africa, particularly those related to infrastructural
development including roads, railways and energy supply, as well as the disease
burden.
Though a number of countries were winning the war against HIV/AIDS, malaria and
tuberculosis, he cautioned that Africans cannot afford
to be complacent because the loss of one African to this scourge should be seen
as one too many.
The Council's session is considering the draft decisions and declarations of the
Assembly of the AU, which will meet at the same venue
25-27 July.
''The people of the continent count on your collective wisdom and will to provid
e them with the means to build a better future for themselves and
their children,'' Kategaya said, urging African leaders ''to build the kind of A
frica we all dream about and the one that we can be proud of
leaving not only to our children but to future generations.''
