Ex-Namibian President, Nujoma, escapes road crash

 

Windhoek, Namibia (PANA) - Namibian police have arrested a 25-year-old man whose vehicle almost crashed into the motorcade of former president Sam Nujoma in the

northern town of Oshakati, reports said Wednesday.

Newspaper reports said the man, who is believed to be working for a local bevera ges company, could be facing charges of attempted murder or reckless driving or b oth and will appear in court soon.

Oshana regional police Commander Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa told a local daily, Ne w Era, that the driver of the vehicle, a red VW Golf which was travelling in the

opposition direction of Nujomaâ?s convoy Tuesday afternoon, pulled into the oppo site lane, narrowly missing direct collision with Nujomaâ?s official Mercedes ve hicle.

â?We were only lucky that the driver who was driving the Founding Father (Nujom a) is a man with principles and very experienced. He (Nujomaâ?s driver) avoided a head on collision or hitting that car between the doors,â? Kashihakumwa was qu oted as saying.

The police said the driver was over speeding and was not under the influence of alcohol.

Nujoma, referred to as Founding Father of the Namibian nation, is a revered hero of Namibiaâ?s liberation struggle.

He is former president of the ruling Swapo party, which he helped found.

Nujoma stepped down from power after serving three terms. Since then, the ageing fiery nationalist has taken up geological studies.

He recently graduated with a Masters Degree in geology from the University of Na mibia.
