EIB provides EUR82m for Namibian cement plant

 

Windhoek, Namibia (PANA) - The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided a EUR 82 million grant towards the construction and operation of Ohorongo Cement factory, the countryâ?s first ever cement manu facturing plant.

Construction of the cement plant is expected to be completed in 2011.

Ohorongo Cement is owned by German company Schwenk Cement, a family-owned medium size construction materials and cement firm.

Ohorongo is situated in Otavi, about 435 kilometres north of the capital Windhoe k. The cement manufacturing plant will be able to meet domestic demand as well as exports to Botswana, Zambia and Angola.

â?The EIB is pleased to be able to provide (a EUR 82 million grant to) Namibiaâ ?s only cement factory and stimulate economic activity in northern Namibia,â? EIB said Tuesday.

The cement plant will have an annual production capacity of 700,000 tonnes and c over cement production from raw material preparation to cement dispatching.

The EIB grant will also finance a grinding mill, access roads, a railway spur an d housing facilities for the workforce.
