Madagascar crisis talks end, parties to form joint govt

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The Madagascar crisis talks, that had been on at the AU headquarters in Ethiopiaâ?s capital, Addis Ababa, for the most part of th is week, ended Saturday morning with a huge success, according to negotiators.

In the end, the four chief players in the country's political wrangling finally struck a deal to form a joint government to be led by three presidents.

They agreed on the composition of the joint transitional government as follows: - Andry Rajoelina as President, the ousted Marc Ravalomanana and former presiden t , Didier Ratsiraca, as co-presidents.

The leaders have also agreed to formulate a charter for the transitional governm ent which will remain in power for nearly a year.

The transitional government is, therefore, to be led by a group-presidency but R ajoelina will remain the key figure, according to sources close to the Malagasy c risis talks which ended after a lengthy and intense discussions from early this w eek.

On Friday, the Malagasy politicians had an almost 24-hour intense discussion thr ough Saturday morning.

The four political camps led by current Malagasy leader, Rajoelina, the ousted R avalomanana as well as two former presidents, Ratsiraca and Albert Zafy, were se e n leaving the AU Headquarters this morning apparently exhausted from sleeplessne s s.

The elongated Madagascar crisis talks recovered from a brink of another round of failure when Rajoelina, returned to the AU-negotiated talks after walking out o n Thursday night. He was convinced to return to the negotiating table by members o f the UN delegation.

â?After Rajoelina walked out, the UN people went to Sheraton Addis (a five-star hotel where all the Malagasy politicians but one are staying) and held talks wi t h him. Friday morning he got back to the negotiations,â? UN sources said.

Ravalomanana refused to stay in the same hotel with his rivals, preferring inste ad to stay at Hilton Addis.
