Mphandula, west of Lilongwe, Malawi (PANA) -
Pop super-star Madonna, currently i
n Malawi on a charity tour, has promised to bring electricity to a rural Malawia
n
village, PANA reported from here Thursday.
"I am hapy for the work going on here," said Madonna at the Consol Homes in the
village of Mphandula, some 50 kilometres from the Malawian capital of Lilongwe,
a
dding "I know you work in darkness; I will bring you electricity."
Electricity covers only six per cent of Malawi.
Madonna, through her charity Raising Malawi, has pumped US$ 500,000 in the child
day care centre that feeds and educates 3,000 orphaned children, according to t
h
e centre's Executive Guardian Alfred Chapomba.
"We are very grateful to Madonna," Chapomba told PANA, noting "her money has tur
ned around the lives of a lot of orphans and other vulnerable children here."
Madonna was accompanied to the centre by her four children - 13 year-old Lourdes
, nine year-old Rocco, four year-old David Banda and Mercy Chifundo James, also
f
our.
They were serenaded by choral and banjo music and at one point Madonna and David
joined the dance.
Madonna, who arrived in Malawi on Sunday, on Monday performed the ground-breakin
g ceremony for her US$ 15 million Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.
