Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) -
The 13th edition of the FIFA Under-17 World
Cup got underway in Nigeria Saturday, with a very impressive
opening ceremony at the glistening Abuja National Stadium in the
nation's capital.
The opening ceremony was marked by a display of the rich culture of
Nigeria, with different groups treating the spectators to various
performances.
From colourful masquerades to men on stilts, the performances kept
spectators on their edge of their seats throughout.
School children also engaged in a well-rehearsed calisthenic show,
with formations showing the map of Nigeria and the 'fair play'
inscription, among others.
Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua, who was represented by his deputy,
Goodluck Jonathan, said Nigeria was happy to host the tournament.
''I am delighted to welcome you all, particularly the young
footballers from around the globe, to our country, Nigeria, for the
13th edition of the
FIFA Under-17 World Cup,'' the President said.
''Let me congratulate all Nigerians for the good fortune of hosting
the entire world,'' he added.
In his speech, FIFA Vice President Jack Warner congratulated Nigeria
for the hosting.
''Today marks the realisation of two years of triumphs, tribulations,
harwork, two years of efforts, two years of successes and failure...I
therefore,
on behalf of president Sepp Blatter, the FIFA and on my own behalf,
want to thank the government and people of Nigeria for having made
this day possible,
for having made this event a reality,'' Warner said.
Other personalities who attended the opening ceremony included FIFA
Vice President and President of the Confederation of African Football
(CAF), Mr.
Issa Hayatou and FIFA Secretary-General Jerome Valcke.
