Zuma meets Tsvangirai in Cape Town (corrected)

 

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai pai d a surprise visit to South Africa President Jacob Zuma in Cape Town Wednesday to ask for renewed support for effor ts to resolve the political impasse in his country.

Tsvangirai suspended participation in the power sharing "Global Political Agreem ent" in protest against President Robert Mugabe's policies and the arrest of leading Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) official Roy Bennett.

Tsvangirai requested the meeting to brief Zuma on recent developments in Zimbabw e, and indicated he would be briefing other leaders in the region.

The visit to South Africa followed a meeting Prime Minister Tsvangirai held with President Armando Guebuza of Mozambique, who chairs the Troika of the Southern Africa Development Community Organ on Politics, Defence and Securit y Co-operation.

Tsvangirai indicated that the Troika would be meeting in Zimbabwe next week.

Zuma reiterated his governmentâ™s readiness to assist in the full implementatio n of the GPA in line with SADC processes.

He expressed concern at the situation in Zimbabwe, saying: âśZimbabwe should no t be allowed to slide back into instability.
