Accra, Ghana (PANA) â" The victorious FIFA U-
20 world champions, the Black Sate
llites of Ghana, on Monday presented the trophy they won in Cairo last Friday to
President John Evans Atta Mills after they had gone on a float through the princ
i
pal streets of the Ghanaian capital, Accra.
Tens of thousands of football fans and residents of Accra lined the streets as t
he convoy of vehicles carrying the players and officials crawled along amidst th
e
heaping of praises on them.
Captain Andre Dede Ayew and strikers Dominic Adiyiah and Ransford Osei held the
World Youth trophy for the crowd to view.
The players and officials had earlier in the day held a press conference at whic
h they were presented to journalists.
They ended up at the seaside Independence Square late in the evening where a hug
e musical show is is being held.
The Satellites beat Brazil 4-3 on penalties at the Cairo International Stadium i
n Egypt after a nail biting final to lift World Cup, the first by an African cou
n
try.
The Ghana Football Association said a regional tour was being planned for the te
am.
President Mills praised the team for its achievements and promised a â?lasting
reward at an appropriate timeâ?.
He said the reward due them should reflect the enormity of their success, adding
that an â?attractive packageâ? would be announced after thorough consultations
with stakeholders.
Apart from winning the trophy, striker Adiyiah was the voted best player and goa
l king which came with a golden ball and a golden boot trophies respectively.
The President said the Satellitesâ? victory was an indication that Africa was r
eady to unite, given the huge support and commendation from African countries.
He singled out Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for his open support to the Sate
llites which, he said, encouraged the team to victory.
