ECOWAS holds extra-ordinary summit on Guinea, Niger Saturday

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold an extra-ordinary summit in Abuja, Nigeria, to discuss the political and security situations in Guinea and Niger Saturday, the ECOWAS Commission announced here.

The summit will consider the recommendations of the International Contact Group on Guinea (ICG-G) which ended its day-long meeting in Abuja on Monday.

Among others, the ICG-G meeting called for the establishment of an International Commission of Inquiry to investigate the 28 Sept. 2009 massacre in Guinea, identify the culprits and prosecute them in the competent courts in Guinea or at the International Criminal Court so as to put an end to acts of impunity.

The Group also called for the creation of a new transitional authority, through dialogue if possible, as well as the non-participation in the forthcoming presidential election of the leader of the ruling National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD), Capt. Moussa Dadis Camara.

Saturday's extra-ordinary summit will also consider the report of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, which met in Abuja 24 August 2009, as well as the report of the findings of a four-member ad-hoc ministerial committee led by Nigeria and composed of Benin, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone, which visited Niger shortly after the Council's deliberations in Abuja.

The committee was mandated to work with all political stakeholders in Niger, including the National Council for Dialogue, towards the restoration of dialogue and consensus which characterized the political environment before the current constitutional crisis.

The extra-ordinary summit on Niger was earlier scheduled for 5 Sept also in Abuja, but had to be postponed indefinitely at the last minute ''to give the leaders more time to consult among themselves''.
