Government officials, artists, curators, the m
edia and supporters of the African contemporary arts industry on Wednesday night
attended the launch of The Artists of Africa Exhibition at the Johannesburg Thea
t
re.
The exhibition has been recognised as an official 2010 FIFA World Cup Host City
Event.
Acclaimed curators, writers and artists from the continent will collaborate at t
he exhibition in order to showcase a unified, dignified and extremely talented A
f
rica to the world.
The exhibition will be open to the public at Museum Africa from the 11 May to 11
July 2010.
â~In keeping the spirit of African art alive, the exhibition continues the dial
ogue of contemporary African art which often happens outside the continent,â? sa
id curator Melissa Mboweni.
Meanwhile, this month not only saw the first African qualification for the World
Cup, but the first of what will be hundreds of multilingual articles, photograp
h
s and audio recordings made available through an ambitious programme to help the
rest of the world see through African eyes.
More than 100 journalists from 34 countries have been selected to participate in
the Twenty Ten programme, a collaboration between the World Press Photo Foundat
i
on, FreeVoice, Africa Media Online, and lokaalmondiaal.
Known as the â?All Starsâ?, these reporters, photographers and radio journalis
ts will be reporting on the lead-up to the event from all across Africa, telling
the back-stories and creating feature articles for distribution to African and g
l
obal media markets.
The top 18 journalists will cover the World Cup in South Africa.
