World Bank President to visit Africa

 

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - World Bank President Robert Zoellick will undertake a thre e-nation tour of Africa week as part of efforts to encourage investors and donors to assist the continent to tide over t he current global economic crisis, according to a World Bank statement received here.

During his visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (9-11 August), Rwanda (11- 12 August) and Uganda (12-13 August), Mr Zoellick will be able to observe closely some consequences of the financial crisis in the se three countries of the Great Lakes region.

The trip is coming ahead of the G-20 summit, scheduled to be held in Pittsburgh, US, in September.

The World Bank's support for Africa goes mainly through the International Devel opment Association (IDA) and the International Financial Corporation (IFC).

The IDA grants donations and loans with low interest rates to the 79 poorest co untries in the world, half of which are in Africa.

In the past year, the IDA has spent more resources than planned to help African countries to face the adverse consequences of the world crisis.

On its part, the IFC provides investments and counseling services aimed at stren gthening the private sector in developing countries.

The commitments of the IFC in Africa have gone from US$445 million in 2005 to US $1.82 billion in 2009.
