Records fall at 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup

 

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) - The second round of matches in group A of th e current 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa did not just produce winn e rs and losers, but a number of records were overturned in the process.

According to world soccer's governing body FIFA, apart from the fact that Spain beat highly-defensive Iraq 1-0 to secure a semi-final berth, the match winner scored by David Villa was his 30th goal for Spain.

Villa thus became his country’s second highest scorer of all time behind Raul, w ith 44.

The Spanish team also recorded a 14th victory on the spin, equalling the record currently shared by Australia, Brazil and France.

The second group A match, between host South Africa and Oceania champion New Zea land in Rustenburg gave Bafana Bafana its first-ever win in the four-yearly Confederations Cup, when they defeated New Zealand 2-0 to stay on course for a semi-final berth.

Action switches to the second round of matches in group B Wednesday, with Africa n champion Egypt taking on 2006 World Cup winner Italy in Johannesburg, and defending champion Brazil tackling CONCACAF Gold Cup winner Un ited States in Pretoria.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-final, slated for 24-25 June.

The final of the competition will be played 28 June.
