UN support Cote d'Ivoire election security

 

New York, US (PANA) - The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire, in conjunction with the national authorities, is working to deploy a mixed units of former rebels and government forces to provide security during the presidential elections scheduled for November.

A UN statement said here Wednesday that the head of the UN Police in Cote d'Ivoire, Pierre Andre Campiche, had met with Ivorian Defence Minister Michel Amani N'Guessan and Interior Minister Desire Tagro to plan the joint operations and security support for the elections.

Prime Minister Guillaume Soro of Cote d'Ivoire announced two weeks ago that presidential elections will be held 29 Nov.

The elections have been repeatedly postponed after President Laurent Gbagbo's mandate expired in October 2005.

The Defence Minister said that 500 members of the Defence and Security Forces had been redeployed in Bouake and 100 New Forces (FAFN) memb ers had been redeployed to the capital, Abidjan.
