| Togo appoints members of "Truth/Justice/Reconciliation" Commission

The Togolese government Wednesday named members of its "Trut
h/Justice/Reconciliation" Commission shortly after a meeting of the council of m
i
nisters here, according to a statement released by the government.
The commission which was set up in the aftermath of consultations which started
on 15 April, 2008, with the support of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
,
will be chaired by Nicodeme Barrigah, a Cathlic Bishop.
The Vice-chair is Dermatologist Kissem Tchagai Walla, former chair of Togo's Ind
ependent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
Professor Koffi Ahadzi-Nonou, a law professor and chair of the University of Lom
e, was appointed first rapporteur while Bona Ketehouli, chair of the association
of "Positive Difference", was named second rapporteur.
The other members include Ms Pépévi Kpakpo, Ms Claudine Ahianyon-Kpondzo (civil
society), El Hadj Imam Kassim Mensah (Muslim Union of Togo), Togbui Agboli Agoko
l
i IV (chair of Togolese traditional chiefs), Ogamo Bagna (former minister and bu
s
inessman) and Professor Koffi Badjow Tcham (history teacher at the University of
Lome).
The Commission has the task of bringing the truth to light about political viole
nces in Togo from 1959, eve of the country's independence, up to 2005, political
violences during the 2005 presidential elections that left 500 people dead and t
h
ousands injured, according to a UN report.
The Commission will be launched officially on Friday.
