Mauritians to travel visa-free to EU countries

 

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - Mauritian Foreign Affairs Minister Arvin Boolell has announced that Mauritian citizens will be travelling visa-free to Europe for a maximum period of three months duri ng a six-month period starting 1 June.

Speaking in Port-Louis Thursday night on the upcoming signature of the European Union (EU) Visa Waiver Agreement between the European Union and Mauritius, Boolell said this was indeed a historical land mark.

He said the criteria would be made available soon, and that the agreement would be signed on 28 May.

''Mauritians will have to consult the Schengen Information System (SIS) prior to departure and there should be no risk-taking because the rules are going to be reinforced and consequences can be far-reaching,'' the Minister said.

The SIS is an information technology system for the distribution of information related to law enforcement, customs control and border security.

The Minister indicated that the visa waiver covers all categories of persons tra velling for all kinds of purposes, except for the purpose of carrying out any paid activity.
