Mauritanian Senate chair sworn in as acting president

 

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - The Mauritanian Senate chairman, Mamadou Ba, was Wednesday sworn in as acting president of the country following the resignation

of General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, head of the military junta, which came to po w er via a coup on 6 August 2008.

Aziz resigned as head of state to enable him contest the presidential election.

Announcing his candidacy for the 6 June election a few days ago, Aziz said he ha d to step down at least 45 days before the polls in accordance with the constitu t ion.

A former opposition leader and minister under Maaouya Ould Sid' Ahmed Taya's reg ime, Mr. Ba was born in 1946 in Diatang, a village bordering Senegal and located

in the south-west of Mauritania.

This is the first time in the country's political history that a Negro-African h as assumed leadership of Mauritania.
