| Mauritanian junta leader for June presidential election

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) -
Mauritanian ruling junta leader, Gen. Mohamed
Ould Abdel Aziz, has formally announced that he will contest the country's presi
dential election on 6 June 2009, ending speculations on the matter.
The military leader told journalists in Nouadhibou, in the country's South-west,
on Sunday that he would step down 'before the end of next week' in a bid to com
p
ly with constitutional stipulations.
He said the president of the Senate would act as the country's President for 45
to 90 days, while the army chief of staff, Gen. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ahmed ould G
h
awani, will head the military council.
Gen. Aziz came to power on 6 August 2008 via a military coup that toppled the go
vernment of elected President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
