Libyan women's body bemoan representation at all levels of governance
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Members of the Supreme National Council for Libyan Women have criticised the lack of representation of women at all levels of governance.
During a meeting in Tripoli on Wednesday with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, the women, led by Leila al-Souissi, called for women to be allowed to participate meaningfully in politics.
The meeting was part of the UN official's consultations with all Libyan components, and in parallel with his efforts to bring the political parties together to find a political settlement paving the way for elections.
According to a post by Mr. Bathily on the X social media platform, the women welcomed the dialogue between key players and promised to provide a written contribution on how to break the political deadlock.
For his part, Mr Bathily said that he had stressed the need for political leaders to create conditions enabling Libyans to elect legitimate and accountable institutions.
Hs also called on them to adapt their positions to support calls for unity and desire for peace and stability expressed by all components of the society.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has convened a meeting of the five main official institutions for a preliminary meeting of their representatives to reach an agreement on a political settlement to the politically controversial issues relating to the implementation of the electoral process.
But disagreements still persist over the holding of this meeting and which parties will attend.
