South Africa's President Ramaphosa to attend Cairo Summit for Peace

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) –  South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the Cairo Summit for Peace on Saturday, his office has confirmed.

"President Ramaphosa has been deeply concerned by attacks on civilians, the resulting enormous loss of life, displacement of people and the humanitarian crisis that has engulfed the Gaza Strip," his office said in a statement received by PANA.

The summit is expected to address humanitarian aid, and will call for a peace process, although Israel and Hamas will not attend.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also attend along with the heads of state from Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, Greece and Italy.

South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO) this week called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories.

It urged ICC prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan “to immediately signal his intent to investigate this and other war crimes, and the crime of genocide in this conflict, and to include in his investigation the liability of those aiding and abetting these crimes”.
