Zuma meets Banda over Zimbabwe

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - South Africa's President Jacob Zuma Thursday met his Zambian counterpart Rupiah Banda in Pretoria to address the political situation in Zimbabwe.

Zuma is the mediator in Zimbabwe's power-sharing government while Banda is chair of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Troika, which is tasked with finding a lasting solution to the political impasse.

The two signed a memorandum of understanding on environment management and natural resources.

Zuma reiterated the call for the lifting of sanctions imposed on President Robert Mugabe and his Ministers.

Zuma has repeatedly argued that the sanctions were proving to be an impediment to efforts by SADC to resolve the problem.

At a state banquet on Thursday night, Zuma said the warm historical ties between South Africa and Zambia must translate into stronger economic, social and developmental relations between the countries.
