Zimbabwe introduces new AIDS drug

Harare- Zimbabwe (PANA) -- Zimbabwe said Tuesday it would introduce a new AIDS dr ug to curb HIV-related turberculosis (TB).
Health Minister David Parirenyatwa said the drug, Isoniazide, prevents HIV patie nts from contracting TB, one of the commonest illnesses associated with AIDS.
"We are very worried about co-infection, a situation where HIV and AIDS patients are infected with other diseases and tuberculosis in particular, given its deva s tating effects on them," he said.
"The drug is meant to prevent those patients from catching TB in addition to HIV and AIDS," said Parirenyatwa.
Despite the fall in infections in recent years, Zimbabwe is one of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa worst hit by HIV/AIDS.
An estimated 5,000 people in the country die of the disease every week.
