Zimbabwe gets US$180m for AIDS

Harare- Zimbabwe (PANA) -- Health authorities in Zimbabwe said Wednesday the coun try would get US$180 million from the Global Fund to fight HIV and AIDS, tubercu l osis and malaria.
The fund was set up in 2002 to spearhead the fight against the three deadly dise ases, which kill millions around the world, especially in poor countries, every y ear.
Global Fund official Rangarirai Chiteure said the first tranche under the new fi nancing would be disbursed to Zimbabwe in January.
He said the bulk of the funding would be targeted at HIV and AIDS, and finance a wareness programmes.
"The first phase of the grant is expected to start in January next year and run until December 2011," he said.
AIDS kills an estimated 5,000 people in Zimbabwe every week, and thousands other s are die from malaria.
