Zambia: Women group applauds appointment of woman as parliamentary president

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) – Women for Change (WfC) has congratulated Zambian Gender Minister, Prof. Nkandu Luo, on her new appointment as President of the Women Parliamentary Caucus under the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU).

WfC said Thursday that the appointment of Luo is cause for celebration because she will preside over the affairs of women at the IPU.

Prof. Luo was appointed during the just-ended 134th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference held in the Zambian capital, Lusaka.

“Her appointment does point to the country’s deliberate steps to promote women’s leadership and reflects on the hard work and determination of Professor Luo as a female politician who aims to improve women and girls’ rights,” Lumba Siyanga, WfC executive director, stated.

“WfC would like to extend a congratulatory message to Hon Luo and declare its solidarity in promoting women’s leadership not only in this country but the entire continent of Africa.”

Siyanga said the appointment of Luo is a positive testimony of the great potential the Zambian women have and if tapped would raise the Zambian flag high.

“As a women’s movement we are greatly encouraged to know that our efforts to advocate for increased representation of women in all sectors of the economy is not in vein.

"For this reason, we believe that our call for the attainment of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) 50/50 representation is not a far-fetched dream because it is attainable,” Siyanga said.

Luo, after her appointment, said women have for a long time being marginalized and left behind but that the Zambian government under the ruling Patriotic Front is working hard to advance the women agenda.
