Zambia: President Lungu seeks Chinese intervention over Zambians living with HIV in China

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) – Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who is currently in China for an official state visit, has disclosed that he has held discussions with the Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang, over the issue of Zambians living with HIV/AIDS who are being sent back from China.

According to local media reports here Tuesday, President Lungu told Zambian journalists in the Chinese capital, Beijing, that he had discussed the matter with the Chinese Premier who has agreed to intervene in the matter and that it will be resolved soon.

President Lungu explained that the Zambian mission in China briefed him that Zambians living with HIV were being sent back home from China by that country's authorities and that the most affected were business executives, students and travellers.

“I have already been told by the Ambassador here that there are incidences that are ugly in character like deporting Zambians simply because of being found with HIV positive, either as students, travellers or business people and I raised it with the Premier this morning and they agreed that the HIV situation is not tribal, it is not racial, it is humanity," President Lungu said.

“It affects all of us and Premier Li assured me that if there is anything like that he will take on board and investigate.”

And the Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign (TALC) in Zambia on Tuesday welcomed President Lungu's concerns on the deportation of HIV positive Zambians from China, saying that the stance taken by President Lungu to discuss this with the Chinese Premier makes the People Living with HIV fraternity feel protected.

“His Excellence has exhibited leadership which must be emulated by all our Political Leaders. As an organisation we feel we have an ally in His Excellency and will do everything in our powers to support him on this path of protecting People Living with HIV,” TALC Country Director Felix Mwanza said, adding that deportation of HIV positive persons from any country is a gross violation of their Human Rights which should not be tolerated.
