Zambia: CSO to partner with Zambia to end child marriages

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) - A London-based global consortium of civil society organisations will partner with the Zambian government to advocate and mobilise resources to combat child marriages.

Towards this end, 'Girls Not Brides' global coordinator Lakshmi Sundaram held a meeting with Zambia’s Gender and Child Development Minister Honourable Inonge Wina on the sidelines of the 58th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York last Friday.

'Girls Not Brides' is a global partnership of more than 300 civil society organisations committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls fulfil their potential.

Wina said there was the need to empower girls with knowledge about reproductive health and their rights, as a way to enable them resist forced marriages.

The Minister said economic empowerment of girls and their families was vital in the campaign against early marriages.

According to a statement released Tuesday by the Zambian Mission at the United Nations in New York, Sundaram commended the Zambian government for its zeal to combat child, early and forced marriages.

Zambia and Canada last year co-chaired and co-sponsored a UN resolution that seeks to end child, early and forced marriages worldwide.
