Zambia, Cote d'Ivoire lined up for Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup invite

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Africa champion Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire are among countries lined up for invitation to the November 2012 Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup in Kampala, Uganda

Confirmation of this will, however, be known at the end of the qualifiers for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations 14 Oct.

The two nations are in line to qualify for the 2013 Nations Cup finals in South Africa in January, and whether or not they will still be keen to take part in the Challenge Cup will only be clear after the qualifiers.

Zambia takes a 1-0 lead to the deciding match against Uganda in Kampala and Cote d’Ivoire has a 4-2 advantage before its return fixture away in Senegal.

As regular Cecafa guests, Zambia has recently won the Challenge Cup -- beating Sudan in the 2006 final in Ethiopia -- and last took part in the 2009 edition held in Kenya.

Cote d’Ivoire was a losing finalist, against Tanzania Mainland, in Dar es Salaam in 2010.

Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of Cecafa (Council of East and Central African Football Associations), said in Nairobi Thursday that Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Cameroon had also requested to participate in the 12-member nation competition, which traditionally welcomes guest teams.

“We shall definitely have one or two guest teams,” Musonye said.

Musonye said that of the Cecafa members, eight had already confirmed their entries and that the deadline is 8 October.

The Cecafa members who had confirmed their entries are: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania (Mainland), Uganda and Zanzibar.

The other members are: Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya and Sudan.

The tournament runs between 24 November and 8 December.
