Wife of detained Burundi opposition leader wants her husband released
Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - The wife of a Burundian opposition leader, Frédéric Bavugimvugira, who was arrested for an alleged crime of adultery, has said she is convinced there was "political motive" behind her husband's arrest and requested that authorities release him in Bujumbura.
Gloriose Bamvuginyumvira Kubwimana: told the African Public Radio, a local private station, said "I have not appointed anyone to spin my husband. He has no history of adultery for the years we have been living together and I ask , therefore, for his immediate and unconditional release."
Meanwhile, the prosecutor has dropped the adultery charge but said the state had sufficient evidence to find him guilty of attempting to bribe a police officer while offering him a total amount of 200,000 Burundian francs (about US$ 150).
According to Mrs. Bamvuginyumvira, "there is no reason to talk about attempted bribery and even less to confiscate the money as long as the criminal charge of adultery that my husband is facing has been dropped".
Frédéric Bamvuginyumvira is the sole presidential candidate of the opposition Alliance of Democrats for Change (ADC), a coalition of eight political parties for the elections in 2015.
PANA reports that pre-election political climate in Burundi is characterised by tension between government and the opposition coalition, following a controversial plan to amend the constitution ahead of general elections in 2015.
Opposition is concerned that Burundian president Peter Nkurunziza intends to amend the Constitution to enable him seek another term in office.
