War with Eritrea said to cost Ethiopia 3 billion US dollars

Addis Ababa- Ethiopia (PANA) -- The two-and-a-half-year war with Eritrea cost Ethiopia an estimated 26 billion birr (about 3.
1 billion US dollar), a private consultant disclosed in Addis Ababa Thursday.
Abebe Tefer, an Ethiopian economic consultant said the total included the procurement of sophisticated and modern fighter planes, tanks and other armaments.
The rehabilitation of damaged infrastructures is also included in the cost.
The consultant said that nearly 400,000 people were displaced on the Ethiopian side during the war, which erupted in May 1998.
He said Ethiopia Airlines was forced to transfer its operational headquarters from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya, while the re-routing of flights to Africa, the Middle East and other destinations, involved losses, also included in the war cost.
The war ended in June 2000, when both countries signed a cease-fire agreement currently being implemented under UN supervision.
