WHO strongly condemns the deadly attack in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia (PANA) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday condemned in the strongest terms the deadly attack on the Pearl Beach hotel and restaurant in Mogadishu, Somalia, which killed 16 people, including a member of its staff.

The attack happened on Friday and left more than 10 people injured at this beachfront hotel in the Somali capital, the UN health agency reported.

Media reported that the incident took place over several hours and involved armed perpetrators.

“We condemn all attacks against innocent civilians and aid workers and express our deepest condolences to the family members of all those killed in this attack,” said Malik Mamunur, WHO Representative in Somalia.

WHO is committed to continuing its efforts to preserve health and respond to emergencies in Somalia, and the safety and security of its staff is a primary factor in ensuring the continuation of response operations to save lives, he said.

“We are appalled by the tragic loss of life in this senseless attack, including the death of Nasra Hassan, a WHO national worker,” said Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Mediterranean. eastern. 

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this heinous attack on a hotel which has claimed the lives of so many, including the precious life of one of our dearest colleagues,” he added, specifying that Ms. Hassan, 27, had joined the WHO office in Somalia to support emergency drought response operations in Jubaland.
