Update 1: Casualties feared as plane crashes in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - A commuter plane with 20 people on board has crashed shortly after takeoff from the local wing of Nigeria's main gate Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, an official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed.

The Associated Airlines plane, a turbo prop, was reportedly travelling to Akure, capital of South-west Ondo State, when it crashed near a big aviation fuel depot close to the airport Thursday morning, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity pending a formal statement.

Rescue officials, including firemen, have converged on the scene of the accident, while reports of casualties have yet to be confirmed.

In June 2012, a Dana Air plane travelling from the inland capital city of Abuja crashed on the outskirts of Lagos, killing at least 150 people.
