Abuja- Nigeria (PANA) -- Nigeria's under-23 male volleyball team Monday recorded a slim win over its Benin Republic counterpart at the ongoing Under-23 ECOWAS Games in Abuja, Nigeria.
The Nigerian team beat Benin in three straight sets to lead the male volleyball competitionâ?s Group B, winning 26-24, 25-19, 25-22.
Benin Republicâ?s coach Antonin Guedegbe however said he was satisfied with his teamâ?s performance despite the loss, blaming the defeat on avoidable mistakes.
Guedegbe was optimistic his team would still make it to the semi-finals of Frida y, hopeful of winning its second game later Tuesday against Niger and facing Nigeria again in the final match on Saturday.
''We can still get to the semi-finals.
Once we win our second game, then we can show that the Nigerian team is not better than ours.
I am sure we can beat them if we meet in the final,'' he said.
Earlier in the day, Sierra Leone had walked over Ghana in a Group A match, with Burkina Faso as the other team in their group.
The Games, featuring four sports - Athletics, Handball, Traditional Wrestling an d Volleyball - is holding at the Abuja National Stadium with 12 countries participating.
