US slams position of Sudan's military leadership on ending devastating war

Washington, DC, US (PANA) - The US says it is deeply concerned by rhetoric from Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) leadership calling for military solutions to the crisis and pre-conditions for any truce in the devastatng war that has cost tens of thousands of lives, destroyed the country's infrastructure and created a huge humanitarian problem.

A post on X by Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the Department of State, stressed that as tens of millions of Sudanese suffer, Sudan's military leaders should be pursuing a path towards peace, not continued conflict.

“Achieving a durable and stable peace requires negotiated arrangements that bring an immediate end to the violence, facilitate sustained humanitarian access, and set a path toward achieving a permanent ceasefire and civilian dialogue,” Mr Pigott said.

Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman and Army Commander, Abdel Fattah al-BurhanAl-Burhan, said last week that his Sudanese government no longer recognises peace initiative of the Quad – US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and UAE.

He said his government has asked the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt to engage in a dialogue with the UAE for managing the war.

On 12 September, the Quad mechanism, proposed a roadmap to end the conflict based on a three-month humanitarian truce, followed by a ceasefire and a political process leading to civilian rule.
