US envoy praises Sudan on forthcoming polls

New York- US (PANA) -- US Special Envoy to Sudan, Gen.
Scott Gration, has commend ed efforts made by Sudan's National Election Commission to ensure the success of the African nation's elections in April 2010.
A US State Department statement made available to PANA here Thursday quoted Grat ion as making the commendation after a meeting with Sudan's NEC members in Khart o um.
``I got a very good report on the progress and preparations for the elections an d we are very satisfied that they are undertaking all the measures that have to be done and completed so that the elections in April (2010) will be credible, " it quoted the envoy as saying.
It also reported that the envoy was pleased with the NEC efforts, which made suc cessful the voters registration process, adding: ``I understand that the results are still being gone through and validated.
'' NEC Chairman Abil Alier, for his part, described the meeting with the US envoy a s ``successful and constructive''.
``We discussed many issues, particularly necessity of international monitors for the coming elections.
We assured him that we are arranging for that,'' he stated.
Alier stressed the importance of the American role in making the Sudanese electi ons a success, saying "the US and the international community have a great role to play to help us make this experience successful.
'' The NEC conducted voters' registration process 1 November-7 December 2009, and t he official results of the registration are expected to be announced in a week's time.
Multi-party elections, the first in two decades, are expected to be held in Suda n in April 2010.
The elections are crucial to the success of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPL M) and the Government of Sudan to end Sudan's Civil War.
